"A collection of handwritten notes—the kind scribbled and passed among students between classes—serves as source material for Molly Springfield. She doesn't betray their contents; even in the close scrutiny of her digital images, Springfield transforms the notes into landscapes and architectural forms. The intimate exchanges and more mundane observations—'Please don't show this note to anyone'—have been carefully painted, erased, reversed, and painted again, rendering the text almost indecipherable. By removing the explicit narratives and amplifying their physical presence, Springfield creates an immediate, shared response to these personal artifacts." - Patricia Maloney, Berkeley Art Museum
